The UDP9112 - Whiteside's plunging variety of Ultimate Flush Trimming bits absolutely erases hardwood, yet does so with fine wispy shavings. The resulting finish is smoother than anything I've seen on a router. Smoother than a helical head planer with no visible lines, snipe, or marks of any kind. I tried this solid carbide compression bit in a 2-1/4 hp handheld router and a slightly bigger table mounted router. The results were the same in both scenarios... fantastic. Listen, if your collection consists of a couple roundover bits and an ogee bit, this obviously isn't going to be your next bit. But, if you have a nice router with 2+ hp, this bit will absolutely transform your router. I sometimes say this is like putting a helical head on your router. When in fact it might be one step better, because of the compression design. It's like having an upcut and a downcut spiral in one bit, meaning you always get a crisp, clean edge both top and bottom. That's been my experience in oak, walnut, maple, and cabinet grade ply. Be sure to turn the speed down on your router slightly, simply because the larger 7/8" diameter of this compression bit. My router speed dial goes from 1-6 and I run it on the 4.5 speed setting. The cutting action is quieter than a straight bit by a fair margin. The chips aren't really chips at all, but fine shavings. Finer than I can produce with my hand plane. I think it's the combination of large bit diameter and special bit geometry that produce such remarkable shavings. I've never taken a chunk out of a workpiece with this bit. It always cuts smoothly and predictably. I sensed no extra vibration from the cutter (over and above the no-load feel of the router itself). That part amazed me. Some say the 1-1/8" cutting length is a disadvantage, and they'd rather have a 1-1/2" or 2" long bit. I disagree. To take advantage of the compression technology, you need to position the wood near the center of the bit. So the 1-1/8" length by design tends to work best with stock that is 3/4" to a full 1" thick. And guess what? That covers about 90% of the lumber I use. I've had a similar bit UDC9112 (the one with two bearings) for a full year of steady use, and it's still a wood eraser. Sharp as ever. While the initial investment is high, the workpieces you save and prevent blowout will recoup that cost sooner than you think. These bits make my work easier and more enjoyable, and that is worth something to me.
