Details

Araracanga (Aspidosperma megalocarpon), also called Volador, is a hardwood with a straight grain and a uniform medium texture. The heartwood ranges in color from golden yellow to reddish brown and tends to darken with age. It’s a heavy wood that is easy to work with and produces good results, though it has an above-average blunting effect on cutters. Glues, turns, carves and finishes well.


Araracanga is not listed in CITES Appendices but is reported by the IUCN as being near threatened. It does not meet the Red List criteria as endangered but is close to qualifying and may do so in the near future.
