Dovetail joinery is considered a hallmark of craftsmanship. Learning to craft these by hand is a worthwhile goal of any woodworker. The WoodRiver® Dovetail Marker 2.0 is a new and improved version of the original marker. It is CNC machined from aluminum for precision, then black anodized for durability. With the addition of two more dovetail ratios, you have additional versatility in your dovetail layout.
The dovetail ratio refers to the angle of the tail and pin sides. Since 1:6 and lower dovetail ratios have a slightly wider wedge shape, they’re often used in softwoods that are more likely to compress under pressure (adding more strength). Conversely, 1:8 and higher ratios have a steeper angle that works well in hardwoods, since these woods aren’t as likely to compress and don’t require as extreme of wedge.
The WR Dovetail Marker 2.0 is set up with one side for softwoods (1:6, 1:5) and the other for hardwoods (1:10, 1:8). The upper number references the ratio of the inside triangle, and the bottom number references the outside. The additional ratios give added versatility so you can choose a dovetail ratio that is suitable for the type of wood used and what works visually for your project.
