"Date Night" Cutting Board

This date night class is a great way for you and your partner to learn to make your own cutting board (approximately 8" X 16"). In this class, we will start with pre-cut wood strips of different species of woods. We will also discuss the techniques of cutting the wood to the specific sizes needed for the cutting board. The process will introduce you to the thickness planner and random orbit sander. The cutting board will be finished with food safe mineral oil which will bring out the beauty of the wood. This is a hands-on class, where you will learn most aspects of wood turning. You will be introduced to every tool from the roughing gouge to the skew. You'll be shown the proper use of each from presentation to final follow-through. In addition to the use of these tools, you will be taught how to sharpen each one for maximum cutting. This class will also show you some techniques to get the most out of your tools. There will also be discussion on other aspects of wood turning, such as finishing and turning green wood, as opposed to dry wood. This class will concentrate on conventional turning tools.

Our woodworking beginnings class introduces you to preparing wood to completing a nice little stool using dowel pins. The Shaker-Style End Table repeats the prep step and introduces you to Kreg jig joinery, tapering legs, and how to handle wood expansion. This class takes you through all the prep steps and introduces you to another design feature-bottom tapering the top to give another dimension to the overall look of the table. Like our other beginning classes, this is a stand-alone class. You can be a true beginner and still end up with a beautiful piece of furniture! This table is made out of solid cherry and is sized to act as an end table that will beautifully compliment the sofa table that many of you have built in our previous classes. This class is designed to introduce you to the many ways this tool is used, from edge jointing to edge decorating to dadoing and rabbiting, as well as sign making. Properly jigged, the router can also be used for flattening and thicknessing lumber and even cutting holes and disks. There will also be some discussion about router tables. Bring your safety glasses, ear plugs, your own router (so Joe can see what you have to work with), and be prepared to learn about the scope and versatility of this most useful tool.

Spindle Turning Techniques

Spindle turning is a great way to get started with your turning experience.There are so many things one can make with spindle techniques; it would be difficult to name them all but examples include baseball bats, scoops, canes, pool cues, candle sticks, and even porch columns, to name a few. In this class, one will learn to safely use the lathe and roughing and spindle tools. We will practice techniques that are applicable to almost any spindle project. We are open to any questions regarding equipment capabilities, tool techniques, wood harvesting and properties, and finally finishing possibilities. The student will learn a lot. Dust masks are recommended, eye protection and fun are mandatory.

You have learned to sharpen your plane iron, clean and tune your plane, and marry the frog to a specific body. Now what? This course will teach various techniques like correct posture, cross grain flattening, squaring boards, and plane adjustments. You will spend time making your own shooting board and learning how to sharpen and use cabinet scrappers. You will need to have an intermediate education with plane sharpening and tuning or have taken the plane 101 class. We will not be sharpening blades or tuning up your plane in this class. If needed, a plane honing station will be available.

Hand Planes - 101

Saturday, September 20, 9 AM - 4 PM

Cleaning, Sharpening, Honing, Tuning. You may have an old hand plane that you have inherited or just couldn't resist as a good buy at a garage sale. Then, when you tried to use it, the results left a lot to be desired. All planes, even a brand new one, need tuning and some planes may even need a complete rebuild. If you have a plane that needs some TLC or a new one you need to learn how to tune and clean, this class will show you techniques to make your plane work efficiently. You will start with taking the plane completely apart, evaluating the condition of the parts, and fixing them as needed. You will learn how to sharpen and hone the iron with a provided jig.
