Topics include: finishing characteristics of wood species; surface preparation and dealing with defects; coloring wood with dyes, stains and toners; selecting top coats and the characteristics of each; application tools including brushing and spray gun basics; and finishing the finish.

The sharpening process can be applied across the many hand sharpening systems available today including water stones, diamond stones, oil stones or the scary sharp sandpaper system. This class will focus on sharpening plane irons and chisels. The skills learned can be applied to any cutting edge tool. Bring a dull chisel or plane blade to sharpen in class.

Learn to tune-up, sharpen and use hand planes to improve your woodworking. Flatten wide boards that will not fit on your jointer, use a smoothing plane to skip all that sanding, and perfect the fit by removing just thousandths of an inch when needed. This hands-on class will cover how to tune-up a new or old plane, getting the blade sharp, and how to set-up and use the primary bench planes. These include the block, jack, jointer and smooth plane. Bring your planes, sharpening stones, honing guides and a practice board to class if you have them. If not, you can borrow what you need in class.

Begin by selecting the kit and wood of your choice, tour the pen area and become familiar with the other kits and projects that can be done on a lathe. If you have turning tools, feel free to bring them, however that is not a requirement.
Create a mosaic of a woodpecker clinging to the side of a tree. Scroll saw a pattern then sand, paint, and reassemble to form the mosaic. This month however we will also employ a technique that while adding color will also allow the grain of the wood to be visible. Hand cut dovetail joints are strong, beautiful and can differentiate your work from the run of the mill. The dovetail joint is not that difficult to execute once someone shows your how. In this hands-on class you will learn how to do layout and marking, sawing and chopping, and paring to you lines for a good fit. The class will cover both through and half-blind dovetails. This class is hands-on, so bring a dovetail saw, pencil, marking gauges, sliding T bevel, combination square, a set of sharp bench chisels and a mallet. If your chisels are not sharp consider taking the Hand Tools Sharpening class taught at Woodcraft. If you don't own all of these tools yet, bring what you have and borrow the rest in class.
