Intro to Woodturning

Want to learn the basics of wood turning or refresh your skills from Jr. High shop class? This class covers the basics, including shop and lathe safety, tool identification and selection, mounting wood to the lathe and wood selection. In the first half of the class students will Learn safety, basic tools, how to cut with each basic tool and tool selection. In the second half they will work on a small project determined by the instructor. Skills learned in this class will prepare students for our more advanced classes. Please don't wear sweater type material. Wood chips stick to this and we don't want you to ruin clothing. Wear something you don't mind getting dusty. Bring eye protection and respiratory protection if you have it or safety glasses will be provided.

Making a Picture Frame

Have you ever gone to one of those expensive framing shops and been taken back by the cost of a picture frame? Here is the opportunity to learn how to make your own frames and save money. The Picture Framing class will show you the basics for measuring and making your own picture frames. You will be shown how to use woodworking joinery that can be incorporated in your framing projects which are not only functional, but decorative as well. You will use the jointer and table saw to square stock, the table saw and the electric miter saw to cut mitered corners, and the router table to create assorted decorative profiles for your frames. Students will make the components for an 8" X 10" picture frame.

Knife Handle Making

From preparing a meal to camping, a good quality knife is indispensable! Sharpen your woodworking skills while you learn the basics of knife kit construction. Designed for any skill level, you’ll learn shaping and installing handles (scales), pins or rivets, sanding, and finishing to create a knife you’d be proud to use - or gift to someone special! Gain skills for safely using a drill press, bandsaw, oscillating/belt sander, clamps, epoxy, and wood finish. All materials and knife parts are included in this fun 3-hour class led by an experienced, expert instructor. Each participant should be able to take home a one-of-a-kind knife at the end of this workshop. Minimum age 14 with parent or guardian present during the class. Please bring your own safety glasses and dust mask.

Society of Period Furniture Makers Meeting

Saturday, April 5, 9 AM - 5 PM

Come join the Society of American Period Furniture makers for their spring meeting April 5th at 9 am. The meeting will feature Ray Journigan's discussion of his Chippendale tea table (design/construction), Chris Haycox's Pembroke table/decorative banding discussion, and a tour of the Moses-Myers House in Norfolk. $30. per person (funds go for honorariums to the presenters and a donation to the Moses-Myers House).

Turners Talk

The second Tuesday of each month Woodcraft, in conjunction with Tidewater Turners, hosts a free, informal meeting of woodturners. Each meeting has time for: Show and tell for items completed or in progress. Discussion of previous club meeting demonstrations. Discussion of a topic of interest for that meeting. General discussion of any other topics of interest. Each attendee is encouraged to ask questions and contribute their thoughts. No membership in any club is required.
