Three Dimensional Carving

If you have ever wanted to carve three-dimensionally but didn't know how to start or make your piece more life-like, this is the class for you. Whether you want to understand how to carve a realistic face, bears, horses, wolves or other animals, this class can help you do that. The class will offer direct instruction for novice carvers and guidance for those who are more advanced. The goal of the class is to make three-dimensional carving accessible and enjoyable for all carvers. Carvers should come with at least a 4 x 10 x 12 block of wood (basswood or butternut are easiest to work with). Carving tools should be of similar sizes & shapes as those listed.

Relief Carving

Scroll Saw 101

Saturday, April 12, 9 AM - 5 PM

This course introduces you to one of the most productive (and fun) tools in any workshop...the scroll saw. In this hands-on class, you will learn saw set-up, proper operation, proper blade selection, and how to fine-tune your scroll saw. You will learn how to make internal and external cuts and do several practice exercises that increase in difficulty as you go. By the end of the class, you will be ready to tackle any scroll saw project.

Turn A Pen

Saturday, April 19, 9 AM - 1 PM

Probably one of the most immediately gratifying woodworking projects is turning a pen. You start with a raw piece of wood, some hardware, and a couple of tools and within a short time you have a beautiful, functional project that you did yourself. Learn the fundamentals of creating a pen and leave with one you can use or give as a gift.

Turn An Acrylic Pen

Saturday, April 19, 1 PM - 5 PM

Take your pen turning to the next level using acrylics. They are both colorful and fun! You will learn the proper techniques for turning, sanding, polishing and assembly. You will leave the class with a beautiful pen in the color combination you select.

Students will learn the parts of the lathe, turning tools, proper turning techniques, finishing techniques used for turning, and SAFETY while turning.

Turn A Bowl

Sunday, May 4, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM

This class is designed for those students who have done some turning but want to learn how to do a BOWL. Students will be introduced to faceplate and chuck turning. Students will learn proper mounting of the work piece, roughing cut, cutting and sizing tenon, outside and inside bowl cuts, scraper cuts, finishing the foot, and finishing techniques. Students will turn a bowl of their own to take home.

Router Basics

Saturday, May 10, 9 AM - 5 AM

Routers can be intimidating. In this hands-on class, students will learn how to safely use this versatile tool for creating decorative edges, cutting groove and dadoes, and template routing, among other techniques. Bit selection and router accessories will also be covered.

Cutting Board

Sunday, May 11, 10 AM - 4 PM

Learn to make a cutting board with various species of wood. You will prepare, glue, cut on a band saw, rout, and finally apply a food-safe finish. This process will result in a stunning cutting board! You will learn how to use a router and one of our templates to make a fun shape or choose to keep a traditional rectangular shape. Some sanding and finishing will need to be completed at home.

Discover the art of intarsia woodworking in this hands-on beginner's class! Learn how to transform simple pieces of wood into stunning, multi-dimensional works of art. This course covers the fundamentals of intarsia, including selecting and preparing wood, cutting intricate patterns with a scroll saw, shaping and sanding for depth and texture, and assembling and finishing your project. If you have turned bowls and spindles on a lathe and would like to expand your skills, then this is the course for you! Learn how to turn end-grain on your way to crafting a shapely lidded box. In this class we will teach you how to make a perfect suction-fit lid using Fingernail Spindle Gouges. You will learn how to manipulate skew chisels; hollow out the box and lid use parting tools; make jam chucks; add decorative touches; fix cracks and splits; and finish your art piece with a final sand and finish on the lathe.

Bandsaw 101

Join Steve for an introductory course on the bandsaw. You will learn about the parts of the bandsaw, proper operation, special techniques, and safety when using the saw. Students will leave having thoroughly practiced every major bandsaw cut, ready to use their bandsaw to its full potential.

Hand Tools 101: Planes

Sunday, June 8, 10 AM - 4 PM

If you have ever wondered how woodworkers made furniture before they had power tools or if you just want to understand why your hand tools never seem to work as well as they do in videos and magazines, the classes in the "Hand Tools 101" series will answer those questions. In this class we focus on the Hand Plane, a tool that can flatten and smooth out a board for use in any project. We will teach you the art of sharpening, tuning and using a hand plane effectively. Once you have mastered the plane, it can be used to help eliminate a majority of your edge sanding. The result is a smoother surface in a fraction of the time; plus, it is a lot more fun than sanding! Students are encouraged to bring their own hand planes to see how you can tune and use your hand plane like a pro and have it perform like new.

Whiskey Cabinet Making

Ever wanted to learn how to design CNC projects? Join Steve for a day to learn the basics of using the VCarve software to design your very own project! Bring your own laptop and copy of VCarve if you have it. Students will leave with a small, 2-Dimensional relief carving of their own design. More advanced topics, such as inlay and 3-Dimensional carving, will be discussed.

We will show you how to save yourself time, frustration, and money, and learn how to grind your turning tools right the first time. The dovetail is one of the hallmarks of fine woodworking, but for most people cutting this joint by hand is a daunting task. Through simple exercises and hands on practice students will build the confidence and skills need to create this beautiful joint. Learn how, with basic hand tools, you can make one of the strongest and most visually appealing joints in woodworking.
